Nova Scotia is unique and effective health human resource planning must be tailored to meet our specific needs. It must address the demographic and health status of Nova Scotians. It must take a holistic approach toward the entire system. And it must ensure that services are available when and where Nova Scotians need them.
The Canadian Nurses Association and the Canadian Medical Association agree that "there is a large and growing consensus that planning for health human resources should be based on the health-care needs of the populations they serve."
We are developing a model that will account for all Nova Scotians and their needs. As part of this process, we are collecting the knowledge necessary to effectively determine our health human resource requirements. We are also encouraging our health-care providers to test new ways of doing things, we are making sure that our training centres are preparing graduates properly, and we are creating policies to successfully support our system.
